Science and Technology Studies (STS Lab)

This group is dedicated to the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). STS is an interdisciplinary domain that examines the complex relationships among science, technology, society, culture, politics, and human values. Rather than viewing scientific knowledge and technological innovation as purely objective or independent processes, STS explores how they are shaped by social institutions, historical circumstances, cultural beliefs, political priorities, economic interests, and the communities in which they are produced and used.

A central concern of STS is understanding how scientific knowledge is created, validated, communicated, and contested. Drawing on the social studies of science, the field examines how scientific facts, practices, and institutions develop within particular historical and cultural contexts. It also investigates the culture and politics of scientific knowledge, asking how power, ideology, funding priorities, public policy, and competing worldviews influence which scientific questions are pursued, whose knowledge is recognized, and how scientific findings are received by the public. STS also considers the ethical dimensions of science, technology, and engineering. This includes questions about professional responsibility, research ethics, data privacy, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, environmental impacts, and dual-use technologies that can serve both beneficial and harmful purposes. These questions become particularly important as emerging technologies increasingly affect individual lives, public institutions, and the environment.

The STS Lab researchers and students pursue questions such as: Who produces scientific knowledge? Who benefits from technological innovation? How do political and cultural values shape scientific priorities? What ethical responsibilities accompany new technologies? And how can science and technology contribute to more equitable and socially responsible futures? By bringing together perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, and technical disciplines, Science and Technology Studies provides a framework for understanding (and critically engaging with) the ways science and technology shape our world.
