Call for Papers – ISA World Congress of Sociology 2027
Legitimacy, Development, and Green Transformation in the Global South: An Economic Sociology Perspective
Professor André Vereta-Nahoum, from the Department of Sociology at the University of São Paulo, is organizing the session "Legitimacy, Development, and Green Transformation in the Global South: An Economic Sociology Perspective" as part of the RC02 (Economy and Society) program at the ISA World Congress of Sociology 2027, to be held in Gwangju, South Korea, 4-10 July.
The session explores one of the central challenges facing contemporary societies: how governments in the Global South seek to reconcile economic development, social welfare, and ecological transition under conditions of inequality, fiscal constraints, financial dependence, and geopolitical uncertainty. Bringing together contributions from economic sociology, political economy, development studies, environmental sociology, and related fields, the session examines the social and political foundations of developmental governance and green transformation.
The organizers welcome theoretical, comparative, and empirically grounded papers addressing topics such as state capacity, industrial policy, business–state relations, climate politics, financial dependence, democratic legitimacy, and the social dynamics of economic and ecological transitions.
The deadline for paper submissions is 14 October 2026.
