Call for Papers – ISA World Congress of Sociology 2027
Problematizing Economic Realities: STS and Economic Sociology Perspectives
Professor André Vereta-Nahoum, from the Department of Sociology at the University of São Paulo, is organizing the joint session "Problematizing Economic Realities: STS and Economic Sociology Perspectives", sponsored by RC23 (Sociology of Science and Technology) and RC02 (Economy and Society), at the ISA World Congress of Sociology 2027, in Gwangju, South Korea, 4-10 July 2027.
The session brings together scholars in Science and Technology Studies (STS), Economic Sociology, and related fields to examine how economic realities and economic problems are constructed, represented, and contested. Rather than treating economic problems as objective conditions awaiting discovery, the session focuses on the social, political, and material processes through which they become visible, actionable, and legitimate.
Particular attention will be given to the role of expertise, publics, technologies, algorithms, artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and hybrid forums in shaping economic knowledge and political action. The organizers welcome both theoretical and empirically grounded contributions from scholars working on expertise, valuation, markets, public problems, digital technologies, and the politics of economic knowledge.
The deadline for paper submissions is 14 October 2026.
